2023 "New Tricks" Grenache
Always evolving, always learning
Through out the country, Grenache has started to receive the respect the grape deserves with everyone getting to see how good it can be when treated correctly. It’s especially pleasing seeing the long history Australia has with this grape and a testament that every old dog has a new trick in them.
Like this collective journey with Grenache, our approach to winemaking (and to be honest, life) is to be always evolving, always learning. It’s not about being good, its about being getting better. This is the third year we have worked with the Grenache from this vineyard and each year we aim to slightly tweak and experiment to improve its final result. The result of a cool year, this version is bright, spicy and subtle, happily taking a chill in the fridge on a warm day or at room temperature on the dinner table.
REGION: Grampians, Victoria
VINEYARD: Arawatta Vineyard , on red ironstone, on Djub Wurrung Country
VINTAGE: 2023
VARIETAL: Grenache
GROWING SEASON: Similar to 2022, the theme of the 2023 season was cool and wet. The cool start meant that the entire growing season was delayed, pushing pick dates later than previous years. However, these cooler conditions resulted in great flavour development at lower sugar levels.
WINEMAKING: Gentle winemaking was the theme with this wine. Destemmed fruit was cold soaked for 3 days before a native fermentation took off. Gentle hand plunging of the cap just to keep it wet before an early press. The wine finished its ferment in old French oak where it rested for a couple of months before an early bottling.
ALCOHOL: 12.5% - 7.4 standard drinks
FOOD MATCH: The middle bodied profile of the wine makes it a very versatile food match. Think Tempura, braised chicken or even an Indian curry.
